The Citronella Geranium

One of the new varieties, the Citronella geranium is a scented flowering plant that smells like citronella and repels insects. It is grown especially for the oil of citronella and is sometimes sold as the the Mosquito plant.

Planting Tips For Citronella
  • Plant in garden beds, planters and hanging baskets.
  • Geraniums need 6 hours of sun every day to flourish so plant them in a spot that is at least partially sunny.
  • The geranium will do best in a well drained soil (a mix of soil and peat moss for container plants is good).

If planting in containers, choose planters that will be large enough to support growth of the plant. If you find the plant wilting between watering, this may be a sign that it needs to be repotted. Make sure there is adequate drainage and take care not to overwater.

Indoors, geraniums will flower better if you keep them in a sunny spot. They prefer temperatures around 65 degrees during the day and 55 degrees at night. Use a well drained potting mix and fertilize monthly in the spring summer and every 2 months in fall and winter.

Make sure you check the Citronella for signs of pests and diseases
