Geranium Variety

Geranium variety abounds in this diverse plant

First of all there is the wild geranium which grows along the side of the road and is great for country style gardens as well as a plant with medicinal uses. This plant is not the garden variety of geranium which is actually of the genus Pelargonium.

The garden or Zonal Geranium consists of the typical flower clumped plants that you are probably picturing when you think about geranium variety. These can be planted in the garden in containers of flower beds. Some nice varieties of this plant include:

Geranium Johnsons Blue is a Geranium that blooms from mid summer to fall. The flowers are a dark lavender blue that fade to light gray as they mature. It makes a great ground cover or border plant.

Geranium Rozanne has deep blue saucer shaped flowers and blooms from early summer until the first frost. This heat tolerant hybrid of Geranium himalayense and Geranium wallichianum makes a great ground cover.

Geranium Ballerina - compact in form with a dark eye in the center of it’s plum colored veined flowers. The leaves are small and ruffled making this a nice ornamental flower for garden edges.

Geranium Maderense is an astounding plant that grows up to 5 feet tall! It has a trunk almost like a palm tree and is covered in pink flowers. It does require shelter and might be best grown in a large pot. This plant will not survive a frost so plant only in warm zones.

Geranium Splish Splash is a hardy perennial geranium that grows to 24” in height. It gets it’s name from it’s striking 2” flowers that are white with splashes of purple. The green foliage turns reddish orange in the fall.

Geranium Patricia is one of the taller hardy geraniums and grows to about 20”. It has striking magenta flowers and medium green leaves.

Geranium Purple Pillow is rich in deep reddish purple color. A striking border plant, it grows to about 10 inches tall and is covered in flowers in the spring and into the summer. Accented by silver haired leaves, this plant will bloom for month if it is properly dead-headded.

Geranium Hocus Pocus a hardy geranium that has 2” lavender blooms with white centers and the striking contrast of black anthers. Reaching 16” in height the dark foliage and red veined stems add to the drama of this flower.

If it's a hanging basket of window box you want, then you can find a geranium variety to suit your needs! The ivy leaved geranium is well suited for this purpose with it's trailing vine like branches that can hang down up to 3 feet. A natural for hanging baskets and window boxes alike, this plant comes in a range of color including the ever popular red.

If you prefer some scent in your garden, you can find a scented geranium that will fill your garden with a heady aroma. The leaves release oils when bruised and you can get plants that smell like roses, lemons, nuts and spices, coconut and fruits.

Geraniums can also be beautiful when grown in the house which is necessary for some varieties such as the Martha Washington or Regal geranium as it is not suited for growing out doors.

In addition to the beauty of these plants, geraniums are known to possess medicinal properties so growing geraniums can be a worthwhile task.
