The geranium has astringent and antiseptic properties and is reputed to help with ailments of the skin as well as be a claming herb for stressful times. In addition, it can be used in cooking and is considered safe, although those who are pregnant or have an autoimmune disease should avoid eating it.
Other medicinal uses for geraniums include relief from symptoms of PMS and menopause, help in healing cuts, bruises, sunburn and eczema. Aids in the relief of hemorrhoids and can help reduce varicose veins and insomnia. The geranium has been used as a natural tick and insect repellent in dogs and humans.
To Get The Medicinal Uses For Geraniums
In A Tea:
You can make a tea from dried or fresh leaves. For dried leaves, use 2 teaspoons, for fresh use ¼ cup. Pour 1 cup of boiling water over the leaves and let sit for 5 minutes. Strain the leaves out and drink.
As A Compress:
A herb compress can be made from water infused with botanical leaves. Make the water the same way you would make a tea – pour boiling water over the dried herb and cover tightly. For the compress, it is best to let the mixture sit for 15 minutes. When done, strain out the herb and soak a cotton cloth in the water – squeeze out excess moisture and apply the compress to the affected area.
As An Oil:
Fill a jar with the dried herbs almost to the top. Pour in extra virgin olive oil – make sure the oil covers the herbs and goes 1” above the volume of the botanicals. Put in the sun for 2 weeks shaking it daily. Strain out the flowers. You can store this infusion in the fridge for up to 3 months.
