Geraniums And PMS
Among the medicinal properties attributed to geraniums is the ability to help relieve the symptoms of PMS and menopause.
Geraniums have astringent and antiseptic properties and have been used for healing and to repel insects for centuries. Native to South Africa, the plant produces essential oils in small glands around the foliage and flowers. The best time to harvest the oil is when the plant is just starting to flower.
For relief of PMS symptoms, one can try drinking a tea made with geranium leaves. Teas can be made from dried or fresh leaves and 1 cup of water. When using dried leaves, 2 teaspoons is enough. When using fresh leaves ¼ cup should be used. Boil the water and pour over the leaves. Let steep for 5 minutes then strain out the leaves and enjoy!
Other uses for the geranium include help in healing cuts, bruises, sunburn and eczema. Aids in the relief of hemorrhoids and can help reduce varicose veins and insomnia. The geranium has been used as a natural tick and insect repellent in dogs and humans.
The healing oils can be infused and applied topically or ingested as a tea or essential oil.
Since the geranium has antiseptic properties, it is reputed to help restore balance in the skin and hair when applied topically. As a calming herb, drinking geranium tea can help relieve stress as well as abate symptoms of PMS.
