Types Of Geraniums
There's many types of geraniums in different colors sizes and shapes. Here's a few to get you started:
Wild Geranium grows freely throughout the United States. It is often used in country style gardens and flourishes in open woods and low grounds. It grows from 1 to 2 feet in height with large leaves. The flowers are pale violet and bloom from April to June.
Geranium Maculatum or the spotted geranium is native to North America and blooms in late spring to mid summer. It makes a great border plant growing from 12 to 24 inches and having flowers in a lavender to pink shade.
Scented geraniums have the added bonus of enticing scent added to these lovely plants. Some of the scents available include rose, fruit, lemon, mint, nut and spice. Grow them indoors in the winter and feel like you are sitting in a summer breeze!
Red geranium is the classic potted plant. With bright red clumps of flowers and large green leaves, they are the most popular of plants. They can be used in bed plantings, window boxes, hanging baskets and planters.
Ivy Geranium or Pelargonium peltatum grows in a vine like manner. It has less dense flowers and is great for hanging baskets and window boxes. This ivy like plant can hang down as long as 3 feet!
Geranium Brookside has deep green leaves and rich deep blue flowers. It grows in a mound with a spread of about 27” and a height of up to 18” and blooms from June To August. To get a repeat bloom in the fall, cut this plant back in early summer. The fall colors of the Brookside are red to orange.

Zonal Geranium is one of the most popular flowering plants and is well suited for growing in flower beds. This plant has lush green leaves with bands or zones (thus the name) and flowers that range in color from bright red to pink to salmon to white.
Cranesbill Geranium gets its name from the seed which is shaped like a cranes bill. This flower is native to North America and makes a great garden flower. Other names for this plant include wild geranium, Alum Bloom, American Cranesbill Root, Old Maids Nightcap, Crowfoot, Stork Bill, Doves Foot and Chocolate Flower.
Citronella geranium is a scented flowering plant that smells like citronella and repels insects. It is grown especially for the oil of citronella and is sometimes sold as the Mosquito plant.
Alpine Geranium has long been a favorite for window boxes. Lush green leaves and small colorful flowers dot this vine like plant that gracefully cascades over your planter to create a lush flowing effect.
Rose Geranium or pelargonium roseum is used for it’s essential oils and medicinal properties. It is said to help heal skin problems, PMS and even reduce hot flashes. This plant has the slight scent of roses and is a great ornamental plant with small pink flowers.
Geranium Sanguineum is a hardy geranium of the Geraniaceae family. Native to Europe, it has a reddish purple to pink flower and blooms from May to June. A good border plant, it grows to about 15 inches in height.
Scented Geranium seed can be used to grow any number of plants that are pretty to look at and to smell! Some scented geraniums include rose scented and lemon scented as well as varieties that smell like nuts, spices and even a citronella scented geranium that repels insects such as mosquitoes.
Pretty Polly Scented Geranium is a compact growing flower with pink flowers that have maroon spots. A great garden plant which has a slight aroma of almonds.
Geranium Ivy Red is well suited for growing in containers or window boxes. This vine like plant will trail down to 3 feet in best growing conditions.
You can adorn your windows with ivy hanging geraniums just like the Swiss! These hanging plants will grow in a well drained soil and prefer a sunny spot. Originating from South Africa, they will grow best if you put them in partial shade on very warm days. Keep moist but do not overwater and fertilize frequently.

Geranium Biokovo has white flowers with pink veins set against dark green foliage. This variety is resistant to deer and attracts bees and butterflies.
Geranium Vining a vining plant that is great in window boxes and hanging planters can grow up to 3 feet long. You can also grow the wild geranium in an informal garden or the cranesbill geranium in a more formal style garden.
Geranium Robertianum grows in clumps in shade areas. It prefers a moist environment and has pairs of 5 petal flowers in a pink to magenta color range with white streaks. Unlike some of the nice scented varieties of geranium, this plant does not smell nice at all!
Miniature geranium is a great pick for garden borders. This hardy plant grows only about 8 or 10 inches tall and blooms all summer. One of the favorites of the miniatures is the Black Beauty which has burgundy leaves which darken to a deep purple. The flowers are a lighter blue purple with burgundy veins and black stamens.
Geranium Incanum - the carpet geranium is perfect for borders and rock gardens. It creates a carpet of purple flowers with medium green foliate and blooms for most of the year.
Hanging Geranium plants on your porch can brighten up your landscape. Of course, I’m not talking about the regular hardy geranium, but of the ivy type variety that is perfect for window boxes and hanging planters. Trailing ivy like vines, this plant boasts red, pink or white flowers and blooms all summer.
Trailing Geranium is perfect for hanging planters. Called the ivy geranium, it has colorful flowers all year and grows like ivy with a trailing vine that hangs down up to 3 feet.
Geranium Johnson Blue is a startling blue color. A Cranesbill geranium (named for the seed which is shaped like a cranes bill), this plant flowers from summer to fall. Makes a nice ground cover or informal border.
Mosquito Geranium is a scented geranium that produces oil of citronella which acts as a repellent to insects such as the pesky mosquito. Aside from the aroma, this plant is also a pretty addition to the garden with it’s pink flowers and interesting foliage. Rubbing the leaves will release the aromatic scent.
